This e-book presents the evolution of a new business model for agriculture production called Distributed Residential Agriculture System (DRAS) proposed by Sustainable Energy & Agriculture Technology (SEAT, LLC) in USA. One of the major components of DRAS is a Micro-Greenhouse (MGH). In this e-book, I also present an innovative economic model for ownership: the “Greenhouse as a Service” (GaaS) conceptualized by the author in 2017. The GaaS concept is a radical shift from the current business model of “selling” a greenhouse to a consumer at a market price and let the consumer be responsible for making use of the greenhouse. In the proposed GaaS model, SEAT “leases” the greenhouse and provides operational support to the consumer for a small monthly fee. SEAT launched the GaaS model in Arizona during the month of June, 2020.
Further, author discovers that GaaS model should be complemented by Social Farming during his participation at the Growth Train [1] accelerator program in Denmark. In this e-book, author presents the design and construction of a Micro-Greenhouse developed by SEAT, LLC in USA. The purpose of Micro-Greenhouse is to implement social farming in an urban environment to foster a sustainable lifestyle. A traditional definition of Social Farming (SoFar) can be found in the EU report [2] “Social farming can be described as: ..promoting the rehabilitation and care of disadvantaged people through their active involvement in farming activities”. This definition of Social Farming is strongly linked to rehabilitation and care of disadvantaged population. However, author believes that the notion of social farming could be extended to a broader section of population who are not physically or economically disadvantaged.
The concept of Social Farming as introduced by SEAT during 2019 Demo Day presentation [1] for the Growth Train accelerator program in Copenhagen has the following characteristics:
a) Home grown vegetables and fruits ; b) Sharing the crop, method and the experience; c) Sustainable farming with Micro Greenhouses; d) Enjoy the lifestyle.
There are four basic elements in SEAT’s Social Farming: a) Location of gardening is home, b) sharing of excess crop and experience, c) Sustainable farming; and d) Enjoyment of lifestyle. In this e-book, Author discusses the potential integration of Micro-Greenhouse in existing homes in urban communities to develop Distributed Residential Agriculture System.
Finally, in this e-book, author presents the Vegibook.com, a marketplace for social-farmers. In October, 2022, SEAT launched the beta version of Vegibook (www.vegibook.com) to promote social-farming so that any home-garden owner can share his/her home grown produce to the members of the Vegibook network.
