What was the most surprising thing you learned while researching and writing this book?

The out-of-bounds artistic creativity of the Taiwanese. We encountered dozens of strange, wonderful and highly improbable venues seemingly willed into existence by folks with the energy, enthusiasm — and capital — to bring their dreams to life.
