Example from Slovenia – abandoned barracks transformed into modern eco accommodation
Slovenia is one of the most innovative examples in Europe when it comes to sustainable tourism, and one of its most interesting projects is the transformation of abandoned military barracks into eco accommodations and sustainable tourism centers. Instead of allowing these large, unused structures to deteriorate, the country has converted them into functional, environmentally responsible spaces that now attract travelers from around the world.
This approach combines the recycling of existing spaces, preservation of local architecture, and the development of tourism that does not require new construction — directly reducing pressure on nature. Instead of concrete and military aesthetics, these spaces now offer wood, natural materials, renewable energy, green areas, and local food.
